What is NCDesk?
NCDesk is a Java Application that North Carolina uses to test the computer proficiency of its students. NCDesk consists of a Test, A Test Simulation and separate Editor, Email, Windows Management, Database, and Spreadsheet applets.
The individual applets and the Test Simulation are available for instruction and practice from both home and school.
The Test is administered in the fall of the 8th grade. It consists of 4 sections (18 questions each) and combine multiple choice and performance items. Students who do not pass the fall test, receive remediation and are retested in the spring.
Where We Have Been (History)
In 1991 the North Carolina Board of Education passed a requirement that requires students to demonstrate "computer proficiency" in order to recieve a diploma. The original test was first given in 2001 and consisted of a written multiple choice sections and a computer based performance section were the products created had to be saved, printed, and attached to the multiple choice anwer sheet.
NCDesk replaced the previous 2 part test in the fall of 2005. The current paperless test is 50% multiple choice and 50% performance. During the development of NCDesk, the computer skills curriculium was also updated. The curriculum that is tested can be found at

Test preparation has been an ongoing process beginning with the student's introduction to computers in kindergarten. As the student enters middle school, an increasing emphasis is placed on refining and solidifying skills.
